An Opinion On “Obamanomics Paints Ohio Red”
Rob Portman for U.S. President? Or the gold standard campaign to learn from? Or both?
If pollsters are correct, Mr. Portman might win very big in the large, always-important, fiercely-contested state of Ohio, which swings between Dem and GOP. Also, I had to look this up in Wikipedia because I’m unfamiliar with him, but Mr. Portman was a major congressional player in welfare reform and tax cutting during the 1990s, and was G.W. Bush’s budget director when the wild spending was finally curtailed during Years 2006-2008. But, most importantly, you could make a case that Mr. Portman has a Reagan-like ability to connect with voters, having won his congressional races by enormous margins. Ultimately, we’ll know for sure about this, come Tuesday evening, November 2, 2010, if he wins by 12-15% in a tough state.
Next year there will be lots of excellent men and women seeking the GOP nomination for president. And I’m from Missouri, not Ohio, but I think you have to watch Mr. Portman. There are just some people who have the magic; i.e., connect with Americans who go to the trouble of voting. Or maybe Mr. Portman’s campaign should be studied by those conservative candidates who want to win, and do it decisively.
